Ground-Control Coilover Install

Click here to go back to ASM tech articles.

Some info on my Specific Ground-Control Coilover setup:
500lb springs up front, 400lb springs in the rear.
Koni Single Adjustable Dampers
Front GC Camber/Caster Plates
Custom GC Shock Housings on all 4

So, lets take a look....

...out of the box they look great!

...next to the stock suspension, the GC's should add lots of clearance to run some wider rubber. My goal is a 265 wide tire....for now anyways.

Now for the install, lets start with the front. Should have been a simple slide in and bolt on. However the lower shock housing did not seem to fit. I had to take a caliper spreader and open up the gap on the GC shock housings by about 1-2mm. Wasn't much, but did create a small hold up, but nonetheless, they were installed! The top mount GC camber/caster plates installed very easy and was very pleased with the adjustability they offer without giving up suspension travel.

So one problem out of the way and now another. The bolt holding the top-hat on was a 19mm bolt which would just barely fit through the hole on the top-hat, but none of my sockets, not even my thin-wall sockets, could fit in the top-hat hole to tighten down the bolt. So I ran to the hardware store, and found a perfect size metal dowel to use so the bolt would sit above the top-hat hole. (see pic below)
After cutting off the bracket, it now will nicely fit on the upper spring perch.

And now for the rears which were a bit more of a PITA. I did order the rear camber plates and because of that, I was forced to re-use the stock upper hats. You can achieve a bit over -1 degree of rear camber with just factory adjustment and that should almost be enough for most street/track cars.

Alright, so the only real problem I ran into with the rears is fitting the stock top-hat onto the GC coilovers. I was told it should be a simple unbolt and bolt on sorta thing, but it wasn’t. Some cutting was involved. As you can see in the pictures, there is a metal bracket for the OEM dust boot which needs to be cut off.

All good to go and simply install the rears.
